Variante di Valico (2003-in corso)

Background

The Variante di Valico consists of 59 kilometers of upgraded grid; it is a highway section connecting Bologna and Florence, in the heart of Italy. The Variante thus creates a route option that has certainly improved the viability of the stretch by disposing of vehicular and freight congestion. As of today, therefore, one can choose to use the existing route of the A1 or cross the Apennines by driving the 32 new kilometers created by the Variante: from Sasso Marconi to Barberino.

The Group’s Work

Since 2003, the Migliaccio Group, with multiple clients such as Sapaba and Calme, has taken part in the resurfacing of the scenic road and the ex novo construction of the direct route connecting the A1 highway in the section between Sasso Marconi and Barberino di Mugello.

For the scenic road, work has been carried out on a three-lane road for the entrance to the direct route and work to restore the road’s viability. The work is still ongoing, and in the missing section between Barberino and Calenzano there is Europe’s largest mole engaged in digging the tunnel. The equipment made available works 24 hours a day, stopping only during the Christmas period and 10 days in August. Among the equipment made available there are the K35 and the K37, sometimes replaced by concrete pumps including the K1 and the K24, this last one adapted to tunnel work having 4 short one-meter sections.
